Jupiter Has Its Own Fire Department Now. Why Jonathan's Landing Is Still Covered by the County

Just before midnight on September 30, crews gathered at three Jupiter fire stations for flag raisings and a bell ceremony. At 12:01 a.m. on October 1, Fire Chief Darrel Donatto read the mission statement and put the Jupiter Fire Rescue Department in service, according to WPTV. One of those stations, Station 10, sits at 500 N. U.S. Highway 1 near Burt Reynolds Park. That puts it on the same stretch of road as Palm Beach County Fire Rescue's Station 18, which the county lists at 777 North US 1. After that night, the two stations belong to different departments.

For most Jupiter households, the change came down to a new patch on the uniform. Jonathan's Landing is different. The community has a Jupiter mailing address and sits inside the town's map, but it is not part of the Town of Jupiter. When Chief Donatto described his department's first day to WFLX, he said Palm Beach County Fire Rescue still serves the nearby unincorporated areas, including county pockets near the Jupiter Inlet, DuBois Park and Jonathan's Landing.

The October 1 split made visible a line Jonathan's Landing has always sat outside of.

The boundary was on the map long before the fire trucks

The Town of Jupiter puts it plainly in its own frequently asked questions. In explaining who counts as a resident, it names Jonathan's Landing as its example: the community is "located in the middle of Jupiter" but "is considered an unincorporated community because they do not pay taxes to the Town of Jupiter." The same answer says a mailing address or a child's school has no bearing on residency. What counts is whether a household pays Town taxes.

Daily life has reflected that line for years. According to the same FAQ, unincorporated communities pay a recreation user fee about 25 percent higher than incorporated Jupiter residents, and incorporated residents get first priority for most programs and classes. The Town also offers a quick way to tell: neighborhoods patrolled by Jupiter Police are in the Town, and neighborhoods patrolled by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office are in unincorporated territory.

Until this month, fire rescue was the one service where the line made no visible difference, because Palm Beach County Fire Rescue covered the Town and the pockets around it alike. Since October 1, it matters there as well.

Two departments now share Jupiter's roads

The Town's department is new and compact. WPTV reported that it operates from three stations with 94 operational personnel and keeps at least 23 firefighters on duty every shift. It also took over fire inspections and building-plan reviews inside town limits. Station 10 houses the first ladder truck ever based in Jupiter. Its American flag wrap honors FDNY Ladder 10, and the crews answered four calls in the first hours after midnight, WFLX reported.

Here is how the stations in and around Jupiter line up after the handoff:

Station Department Address Status after October 1
Station 10 Jupiter Fire Rescue 500 N. U.S. Highway 1, near Burt Reynolds Park In service; dedicated in June 2026
Temporary Station 11 Jupiter Fire Rescue Abacoa Community Park In service, temporary
Station 12 Jupiter Fire Rescue 2197 W. Indiantown Road, beside Cinquez Park In service
Station 16 Formerly county, now Town 3550 Military Trail Returned to the Town
Station 18 Palm Beach County Fire Rescue 777 North US 1, Jupiter On the county roster, Engine 18 and Rescue 18
Station 15 Palm Beach County Fire Rescue 12870 S. U.S. Hwy 1, Juno On the county roster
Station 14 Palm Beach County Fire Rescue 12015 West Indiantown Road, Jupiter Farms On the county roster

The county's station roster gives addresses and apparatus. It does not say which county station is dispatched to a given neighborhood. So the plain fact for Jonathan's Landing is that its fire and medical calls belong to the county department, which still has stations both north and south of the community along U.S. 1.

The station the Town once asked for

The Town knew where this boundary ran when it planned the department. In the July 16, 2024 Town Council minutes, Mayor Kuretski noted that the Town had asked about acquiring the Burt Reynolds station and servicing Jonathans Landing. He said 90 percent of that station's calls were within the Town. He also said the Town had offered mutual aid to it.

Councilor May then described what Station 18 does for the county. According to the minutes, it backs up Station 15 in Juno Beach, Station 19 in town, and often Station 14 when they need resources, and the county runs its water rescue for the Jupiter Inlet and county beaches out of that station. That job covers more than the Town and helps explain why the county still needs a presence on that part of U.S. 1.

So the Town built Station 10 on the same corridor, and the county station stayed with the county. Jonathan's Landing stayed with the county too.

How a call from inside the gates gets routed

None of this changes what a resident dials. WPTV reported that 911 is still the number for fire and medical emergencies. The routing behind that call is spelled out in a dispatch interlocal agreement between Palm Beach County and Jupiter, included in the Town's October 1, 2024 council packet. The agreement has three key provisions:

  • Who dispatches: the County's dispatch duties for Jupiter were set to begin when the Town's department launched on October 1, 2026, under a term running through September 30, 2036.
  • Where boundaries come from: the two fire chiefs set geographic response boundaries and operating details in a separate Letter of Understanding.
  • Calls that cross the line: Jupiter is required to transfer identified fire-rescue 911 calls to the County.

Backup between the two departments is less settled on paper. At the February 17, 2026 Town Council meeting, Town staff said they had told the County they wanted to set up a mutual aid agreement and work toward automatic aid. The Town's FAQ states its intent to keep partnering with Palm Beach County Fire Rescue on mutual aid. To the north and west, Jupiter has lined up with Palm Beach Gardens. "Our two cities operate as one fire department with nine stations," Chief Donatto told WPTV on launch night.

The split was not always smooth. In June 2025, WPTV reported that the County Commission approved the October 1, 2026 start date but denied Jupiter's request for a two-month period of overlapping responses. Both departments are now running on their own, and the county still answers for every unincorporated pocket around the Town.

The county is rebuilding its north end around the areas it kept

The clearest sign that Palm Beach County plans to stay in north county is what it is buying. When Station 16 on Military Trail went back to the Town, the county needed coverage for the unincorporated areas west of I-95 that the station used to serve. As CBS12 reported on September 1, the county had already agreed to pay $1,092,500 for a home at 6519 Donald Ross Road that is being converted into a station. Commissioners then voted 7–0 to buy the house next door at 6557 Donald Ross Road for $1,088,710. The two appraisals on the second home averaged $1,057,500, so the purchase needed a supermajority.

PBCFR told CBS12 that the Donald Ross site will serve that corridor, including Palm Beach Country Estates, Eastpointe and Old Marsh. It is expected to house both a fire suppression unit and a rescue transport unit, and no construction timeline has been set. A $5.35 million budget transfer was placed on the October 20 County Commission agenda to fund two projects: Station 16A on the Donald Ross Road lots, and Station 16B, a temporary station at 12180 FL Alt A1A in Palm Beach Gardens that the agenda describes as serving the Palm Beach Gardens area.

These projects are not aimed at Jonathan's Landing. They show the county building out stations for the pockets it serves inside and around Jupiter, at the same moment the Town opened its own. For a community the Town itself describes as sitting in the middle of Jupiter, the county remains the fire department.

Boundaries like this one also come up when buying or selling in a club community. Whether a property is in a municipality or unincorporated affects which agencies serve it, which taxes apply, and what residents pay for programs.
